Rainbow Six: Siege
Released: 2015 | Developer: Ubisoft Montreal | Our review | Humble Store, Steam
Counter-terrorism games have always been popular among gaming environments. Think of the iconic Counter Strike that tens of millions of users still play today. Nowadays, the issue of terrorism is more topical than ever, and games related to this topic attract attention. The popular Rainbow Six series, numbering nearly two dozen games for various platforms, tells us about the everyday life of the anti-terrorist squad, consisting of operatives from different countries.
Released: 2016 | Our review | Developer: Blizzard
When you first see Overwatch, the last thing you think … is about the game. Because, firstly, with all the love of Blizzard for the blood of demons, orc axes and hellfire, what is happening on the screen is more like a cartoon from Pixar. The one that you watched as a child, wrapped in a blanket. I’m still doing this. And secondly, it’s unusual to get a first-person shooter from a company that has given us thousands of hours in the world of Azeroth and space wars of zerg and terrans. Yes, there were rumors about the Starcraft: Ghost project, which was to tell the story of Nova – the agent of the Dominion. Even later, Blizzard almost announced a new generation MMORPG – Titan. But it didn’t take off.
Fortnite Battle Royale
Released: 2017 | Developer: Epic | Official site | Our review | Free-to-play
Against the backdrop of the popular network shooter with a pronounced survival element PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, we see more and more clones of this game. Some try to shove it into the original games as additional modes. For example, the same GTA V or Minecraft. The same thing happened in Fortnite, which has not yet been released, but is in the early access phase. Just recently, developers have added the Battle Royale mode, which copies the system 100%, but dilutes it with its cartoonishness and the gameplay itself.
The first thing I want to note is that this is a very cool throw-in for those who play only on consoles, because PUBG should be released on the Xbox One, and there is still no exact understanding of when. At Fortnite Battle Royale, you will be allowed to play on all platforms.
Released: 2017 | Developer: PUBG Corp. | Humble Store, Steam | Our review
The multiplayer online game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds or simply PUBG appeared at the end of March 2017, almost immediately taking its place in the tops of sales – more than a million copies sold in the first sixteen days on Steam, 4 million – in two months. A good result for the game in early access. It would seem that we have before us another survival-shooter, of which there are a lot in our time, even the good old Resident Evil got onto this list, which will not last an hour.
Released: 2014 | Official site | Developer: Blizzard
Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft is an online collectible card game based on the Warcraft universe. The main goal of the game is to collect your own card collection, which is replenished by buying sets of cards or receiving them as a reward. Players can also get new cards by purchasing add-ons or by playing the downloadable single-player Adventure mode. Heartstone: Heroes of Warcraft is a collectible card game in the Warcraft universe, sharpened by online battles. Game mechanics are borrowed from Magic: The Gathering, however it is somewhat simplified and redone so that as many players as possible can master it. The basics, however, are the same – players must collect their decks of cards, fight each other with the help of these decks and beat opponents with the help of card effects.
Battlefield 1 and Battlefield 5
Released: 2016/2018 | Developer: DICE
A series of Battlefield shooters has existed for more than 10 years and during this time has managed to become a true icon of video games, each part of which is waiting for millions of fans around the world. Surprisingly, the basic mechanics of the game, overgrown with new details, have remained unchanged since the very first part. At the same time, developers from the DICE studio over and over again managed to “rebuild” the game so that it began to overflow with new colors, and gamers looked at the fresh trailers up to the holes in anticipation of the release.
Warhammer: Vermintide 2
Released: 2018 | Developer: Fatshark | Our review | Humble Store, Steam
Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is a full-fledged sequel with a darker, bloody and tense atmosphere than before. The project was developed by the same Fatshark studio, which means that deviations from the canon are not expected and the players will immerse themselves in cooperative gameplay with first-class hand-to-hand combat in the universe of Warhammer Fantasy Battles, the world of the End of Times.
The developers call the main features of the game: a unique universe, adrenaline gameplay with a first-person view, a cooperative for four people, the presence of five heroes and fifteen development paths for them. Also, characters can change their appearance, weapons, pump talents and abilities. Among other things, the creators improved the system of heroic exploits with one-time tasks and scripts, which became noticeably more interesting.
Released: 2016 | Our review | Humble Store, Steam
Doom (2016) is another part of the famous series in which a player in the role of a space paratrooper will go a long way along the corridors of an abandoned space base on Mars to reach Hell itself and destroy as many demons as possible. There is a special editor with which anyone can create a map or game mode, and share them on the Website.
Doom (2016) is not a continuation of Doom 3 or other parts of the series, and offers its own history of UAC, the world, as well as the protagonist, who is here called the Rock Soldier.
League of Legends
Released: 2009 | Official site | Developer: Riot Games
League of Legends is a competitive computer game in the MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) genre that combines the features of strategy and RPG. Created by one of the developers of the original DotA Allstars, which decided to create its own version of the super-popular map, which ultimately caused a split. LoL differs from its ancestor in a number of mechanics, significantly accelerated gameplay, as well as the number of heroes, most of whom are created under the influence of certain characters from other works.
Like Dota 2, LoL is one of the largest e-sports disciplines in which many tournaments are held – not as “rich” in prize money as in the game from Valve, but not inferior to the latter in popularity.
Released: 2015 | Developer: Psyonix | Our review | Humble Store, Steam
Rocket League is an arcade project that combines the elements of football and fighting racing on powerful cars. It is a logical continuation of the game Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, in which the players did much the same thing – that is, they played football on cars.
The gameplay of the Rocket League is simple. Players control cars with a rocket engine and try to score a ball into the goal. In the process, players must survive by fighting with other players in the game not only for control of the ball.
Resident Evil 2 (Remake)
Released: 2019 | Steam | Our review | Developer: Capcom
For many players, the Resident Evil series of games is something expensive and special. After all, this amazing game series from a talented person named Shinji Mikami along with it carried one of the most successful formulas, thanks to which the franchise became successful and subsequently cult. Many games in this lineup combined dangerous and exciting adventures, scrupulous exploration of the world around them and, in some places, challenging puzzles. Moreover, each game has always been accompanied by a dosed action, competent management of limited resources and a gloomy setting. And against the background of all these mechanics and gameplay features, the rather charismatic main characters always tried to figure out the strangest events and most importantly survive, because a real and consistent zombie apocalypse was always approaching.
Grand Theft Auto 5
Released: 2015 | Developer: Rockstar North | Our review | Humble Store, Steam
Grand Theft Auto V was released at the very end of this game generation of consoles, which is symbolic in itself. If you look at large, then in this game we don’t see anything fundamentally new – everything that is in the fifth GTA we have already seen somewhere somewhere, often more than once. On the other hand, not a single interactive game entertainment has been done at this level, millions of details have not been worked out with such quality. It is because of this that after GTA 5 it is already quite difficult to look towards other games.
The scene of GTA V was the fictional city of Los Santos, which first appeared in one of the previous games in the series -GTA: San Andreas.
Released: 2016 | Humble Store, Steam | Our review | Developer: Arkane Studios
In the second chapter of the Dishonored saga from Arkane Studios, you will again find yourself in the role of a killer with supernatural abilities and return to an amazing world that combines magic, mysticism and technology. Decide for yourself whose role to fulfill: Empress Emily Coldwin or quarterback Corvo Attano. Choose your own style of play: hide in the shadows, quietly avoiding enemies, use a rich arsenal of weapons and killer tricks, or combine both of these styles to decide on the situation. An unusual enemy took the throne from the Empress Emily Coldwin, and a dark shadow of evil doom hangs over the Islands.
Released: 2018| Developer: IO Interactive| Our review | Steam
The previous part of the story about the bald mercenary, although it used some successful finds of Hitman Absolution (shelter system, management approach), was still much closer in spirit to Blood Money. After the success of the 2006 game, the experiments with linearity from Absolution gathered rather restrained feedback from the players. Hitman 2 – which is the second season of 2016 Hitman – follows the same logic.
Divinity: Original Sin 2
Released: 2017 | Developer: Larian Studios | Our review | GOG, Steam
For a gamer, the game is fun. For the critic – a piece of art. For a publisher, a project that invests money. And the money must be beaten off, attracting as many buyers as possible. For the sake of the mass consumer, the product has to be made simpler. To add tutorials, to fill in with hints, to place markers on the map – in general, treat the user as if he is a small child who cannot walk a single step. Fortunately, Divinity: Original Sin 2 is an exception to this rule.
XCOM 2: War of the Chosen
Released: 2017 | Developer: Firaxis | XCOM 2 on Humble | Our review | War of the Chosen on Humble
Instead, in XCOM 2: War of the Chosen, the very ones appearing in the Favorites heading appear. The Three of Chosen: The Killer, Hunter and Wizard are elite from elites, high-level elders fighters with unique skills and a long line of health that appear in almost every mission.
Total War: Warhammer 2
Released: 2017| Developer: Creative Assembly | Our review | Humble Store, Steam
The Hammer of War universe (not where God the Emperor is, but where Sigmar is) is famous for severe gloom. There are almost no heroes here, and an ordinary person lives every day with the understanding that at one point and a half meter rats can come out of the sewer and spoil the whole day. And, most likely, a very short remaining life.
The mechanics of Total War games have been perfected by many, many projects back. Total War: Warhammer takes an honorable place in this row. It was a great, thoughtful game – a real find for lovers of global strategies. Also in the famous fantasy setting!
Path of Exile
Released: 2013 | Developer: Grinding Gear Games | Our review | Steam
After such a long wait, and having been disappointed by this too distant descendant that is Diablo 3, the fanatics of the eponymous license are still looking for a worthy successor to their favorite hack’n’slash. Naturally, they turned to Torchlight 2, the developers of which partly created Diablo 2. Deemed too cartoony, they abandoned it and resumed their exploration. They then turned to Path of exile. This game, a free RPG Online action seems to have some relation to the messiah. Could he be the hidden bastard who will finally satisfy this legion? That’s good, this weekend, it was open beta for everyone and so we could satisfy his curiosity. Even if it’s finished now, it’s possible for a minimum amount of $ 10 to be able to continue playing in closed beta.
