The PlayStation 4 and PS4 Pro will soon give place to the Next Gen. So we decided to imagine what could be this future PlayStation 5 / PS5 and PlayStation VR by cross-checking the rumors but also the very real information. Today we offer a completely fictitious trailer, as we had already done for the PSVR 2 but this time devoted to the PlayStation 5/ PS5 and PlayStation VR.
PlayStation 5/ PS5 and PlayStation VR
We all know that the PlayStation 5 / PS5 will arrive in the years to come. Sony have confirmed that they are working on its design. We can roughly estimate its arrival on the market in 2020 or even 2021. It is possible that the concept will be unveiled in 2019 without showing the final design just to create a buzz before its official launch. If you are, like us, a fan of new technologies and video games, it is always interesting to project the time of an article in the future. Some clues to the likely evolution of the PlayStation brandare found in its history, other indices linked to its architecture seem more and more credible, especially if one is interested in the semiconductor market. We will cross-check the different information on the PS5 and try to establish a robot portrait of the future Sony home console: The PlayStation 5.
The PlayStation brand
It all started for the PlayStation brand on September 29, 1995, the launch date of the console in Europe. Its selling price was around € 399 at the time. The first PlayStation of the name has established itself against the Nintendo 64 and the Sega Saturn. 9 Years later, Sony announced that the console had sold 104.25 million copies.
The PlayStation 4 was released on November 29, 2013 in Europe. To date, it has sold more than 83 million units (with sales of PS4 Pro). The PS4 has a computing power of 1.84 TéraFlops and has as competitors the XBox One from Microsoft and the Wii U from Nintendo. Like the PS3, the PS4 has a Bluray player. PS4 comes with AMD Jaguar generation processor with 8 cores clocked at 1.6 GHz with x86-64 instruction set + an AMD Radeon graphics circuit of the HD 7000 generation, at 800 MHz, equipped with 18 graphic cores clocked at 800 MHz, each heart carries 64 units of calculation for a total of 1,152 computing units developing a computing power of 1.84 TFlops.
In November 2016, Sony launched a more powerful version of the PS4. The PS4 Pro has a computing power of 4.2 TeraFlops, or 2.33x more than a standard PS4, 18 PS3, 692 PS2 and 39 038 PS1 !!! Like her sister, she is equipped with the same Bluray reader. This is the first time in the history of Consoles that we have an update of this type in the same family, the PS4 is not a NextGen console and is indeed part of the PS4 family. The processor remains the same but it is clocked at 2.1 GHz (instead of 1.6 GHz on PS4).
AMD and PlayStation 5/ PS5 and PlayStation VR
The heart of the future PlayStation 5/ PS5 and PlayStation VR becomes clearer and even if this information is not yet official by Sony, it is more than likely. We already know that Sony will continue to have its chips developed by AMD. After leaving IBM and its famous CELL processor on the PS3, Sony had chosen an AMD Jaguar for the PS4. We know that AMD is currently working in close collaboration with SONY and Microsoft for the creation of their respective future consoles.
According to several leaks from anonymous engineers, the PlayStation 5/ PS5 and PlayStation VR should use both a Zen 2 CPU (Ryzen) and an AMD Navi architecture. The PS4 incorporated an APU, a single-chip system that consists of both the CPU processor and the GPU graphics processor. AMD currently offers this type of APU with the RYZEN coupled to the Radeon Vega graphics processor.
The future of Virtual Reality
Sony should not give up Virtual Reality but how to launch a new VR headset and a console at the same time? It is clear that Sony will bet everything on the PS5 and there is a good chance that they will not take the risk of releasing a PSVR2 at the same time as the PS5. If the headset arrives a year before the release of the PS5, it should be compatible with at least the PS4 Pro (It could therefore be called PSVR Pro) and therefore should have a software response via an update of the PS4 system to operate its tracking camera (because it will not necessarily use the PS camera or the optical tracking system).
Another possibility, the new PSVR would arrive 6 months or a year after the release of PlayStation 5either in 2021 or 2022… But then again, we would end up with a current PSVR completely outdated or even ridiculed by the VR market. The PSVR released in 2016 cannot last 5 or 6 years…
A PS5 oriented towards dematerialized and streaming
The video game market is constantly evolving and new trends are constantly being formed. We all know today that our beloved consoles will gradually disappear from the profile of Internet Box type models that will broadcast video games like Netflix. In any case, this is what the big market players want to aim for. More games in the shops, a bunch of subscriptions will allow us to have access to a complete catalog of games. As soon as you no longer pay for your subscription, you can no longer play.
We can now start to have a precise idea of the technical data sheet of the future Sony PlayStation 5/ PS5 and PlayStation VR . The semiconductor market is predictable and to be able to display an acceptable selling price for a game console, manufacturers cannot integrate the latest generation components. These are the components of today that we will find in the consoles of tomorrow! We hope you enjoyed this file and that it allowed you to have a good trip in the future.
