In Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the link between life and death is tenuous. As a Wolf with a weapon, a loyal shinobi seeking to save a young nobleman with the cursed line, you cross a feudal Japan saturated with war remnants which lets glimpse the idea of ​​mortality: corpses melting in the local flora. Wildlife, so many wounded soldiers sharing their last words that you could create a digest of the lost. All this is underlined by a cruel and ultimately exhausting irony: you cannot die.

Sekiro often plays with his sense of tone. The solemnity of a samurai film is marred by dark and absurd moments. There is a training section that is offered to you by a man who only exists to die for you over and over again, and he’s pretty cold. “Hey man,” he might as well say.

“Do you want to play and kill me a little more for practice?” Having an understandable existential crisis stemming from his inability to die, he asks you to murder him with the same occasional apathy from a lonely friend asking you to watch the game for the third time this week. Death is a kind of joke and it is this feeling that has plunged the gaming world into total chaos.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Fight

Sekiro’s fight is based on two statistics called Vitality, which is health, and Posture, represented by a counter that is built when you are fundamentally unbalanced. Your enemy has the same meters. The higher the light meter, the less you are in balance. The more your vitality decreases, the faster your posture indicator increases.

If your posture indicator reaches its maximum, you are likely to be attacked by an opponent, which often results in substantial punishment. If you maximize your opponent’s posture bar, you can inflict a fatal blow and kill or take all of their health. Generally, this system rewards aggressive players and strategic pressures. It’s hectic and it can be an absolute explosion.

Your shinobi can also deceive death. Each enemy you defeat charges your resurrection ability. When the screen of death appears, you have the option to press a button and come back to life in an explosion of energy. If the enemy has started to move away from your corpse, you can end the fight decisively, with a strike or two. This is even more useful against bosses, who can take several deaths before finally falling. It will not be easy, however. You will need all the tools in your arsenal to win your revenge.
