Square Enix made Final Fantasy XIV Online Starter Edition, the base version of its online role-playing game, temporarily free on the PlayStation Store without warning.
Final Fantasy XIV Online Starter Edition can be added to your digital library on PS4 for free.
Final Fantasy XIV Online Starter Edition includes the base version of Final Fantasy XIV (without the additions of Heavensward, Stormblood and Shadowbringers) and access to a 30-day free period – the project requires a monthly subscription.
As users of the ResetEra forum noted, game owners will not be able to use the free base version of Final Fantasy XIV to get an additional month of subscription.
Do not confuse Final Fantasy XIV Online Starter Edition with the free trial. The latter is not limited in time, but allows you to develop your character only to level 35.
Final Fantasy XIV is available on PC and PlayStation 4, and sooner or later will appear on the Xbox family console. Until June 2017, the game was also available on the PlayStation 3, but with the release of the Stormblood extension, support for this version was discontinued.
Updates for Final Fantasy XIV continue to be released so far, but the development of future patches has been seriously slowed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Patch 5.3, which was scheduled for mid-June, will be delayed by at least two weeks.
